With new car prices continuously rising and affluent car owners moving on to newer and more expensive cars every few years, the market for used cars is becoming increasingly attractive and more competitive.

Some used cars are only 2 to 3 years old, less expensive than their new counterparts and a savings of apx. $3,000 less than the average used car sale price. That’s a great savings for anyone in the market for a used vehicle.

For prospective car owners and those looking to save money on a new-to-you car purchase, we’ve compiled a list of 10 of the best used cars to purchase in 2014, all of which are available for less than a private party value of $12,000 and some just slightly more at used car dealerships.

Without further ado, here’s our top 10 best used cars for under $12,000 (or so):

#10 – 2005 Volvo S60

This car is safe, luxurious, and has surprisingly good fuel efficiency. It also offers more space than you might expect. Volvo is often overlooked in the used car market, but this may be a sedan you want to take for a test drive.

#9 – 2007 Ford Escape

This car gets surprisingly good gas mileage for an SUV and comes complete with AWD (rare for such an entry-level SUV) and several features perfect for a family that likes to get outdoors that doesn’t need an oversized Suburban.

#8 – 2004 Toyota Prius

Like all hybrids, the Prius gets amazing gas mileage and is much more spacious than it appears. Its practicalityone of the best options for used car shoppers who want to save at the fuel pump.

#7 – 2005 Honda Pilot

This SUV can hold up to 8 people, providing a somewhat more fuel efficient and more stylish alternative to the minivan, a great alternative to the Ford Escape.

#6 – 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500

The Chevy Silverado is one of the most dependable trucks you could ask for. It offers both comfort and power, and is perfect for any of your pickup needs. With several different trim and engine options, there is likely one to fit your needs.

#5 – 2007 Mazda3

The Mazda3 gets impressive gas mileage and is one of the sportiest-looking cars of its price available on the market.

#4 – 2005 Toyota Camry

The Camry has had a reputation as a dependable car for most of its lifetime and is consistently one of the top used and new car sellers year after year.

#3 – 2005 Honda Accord

Like the Toyota Camry, Accords are well known as dependable, affordable, and long lasting cars. If you’re looking at the Camry, you’ll want to check out the Camry too.

#2 – 2011 Hyundai Accent

The newest model year on our list, the 2010 and newer Accent’s should still be covered under Hyundai’s standard 5-year warranty, adding a little ease to purchasing a used vehicle, especially if you are doing some from a private party.

#1 – 2007 Honda Civic

Another econo-car like the Accord and the Camry, Civics have had a great reputation since the late 1980’s. They are fuel efficient, reliable and often have good resale values.

Well, that concludes our top 10 best used cars under $12,000 list. With so many used vehicles on the market it can be difficult to narrow it down if you are set on one manufacturer, make or model. What car do you think should have made the list?

2005-07 toyota Rav4 and 2004-06 toyota highlander as well as the 2005+ corolla S

Nice article though. Wish I trusted the Volvo.

I would much rather have a 2010 or 2011 Ford Fusion than a 2005 Toyota Camry. As reliable and much more comfortable, higher resale value because it’s newer, etc. Another great deal in this category would be the Mercury Milan, a rebadged Fusion. Too many cars on this list are unreliable, like the Chevy pickup and the Hyundai Accent.
